EQUIMOB: Inclusive Cities through Equitable Access to Urban Mobility

Guest lecture from Dr. Selim Jahangir at Utrecht University

Selim Jahangir, our postdoctoral researcher working in Manipal Academy of Higher Education, gave a lecture as part of the Geographies of Health in Global South module at the Department of Human Geography & Planning, Utrecht University.

The lecture focused on (1) how inequality of access to transport influence the wellbeing of the older adults in the Global South? and (2) what are the socio-cultural barriers in the urban transport system that reduces older adults’ access to work, healthcare in Dhaka? He explained how Accessibility, Availability, Affordability and Acceptability of transport affect the mobility of older adults with examples from the ongoing research in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He discussed the existing mobility constraints and the negotiating strategies of the older adults to access the health care facilities in Dhaka. The lecture also highlighted adapting inclusive urban transport planning that would include vulnerable groups such as older adults, women and people with disabilities.
